Why members stay

The four things that actually make the difference

There is no shortage of gyms in Queens. These are the four answers members give when we ask them, at the twelve-week retest, why they are still here.

An assessment before a sales pitch

Your first appointment is ninety minutes with a coach and costs nothing. We measure what you can actually do, ask what you actually want, and write you a plan. If the honest answer is that you need a physical therapist and not a gym, that is what you will be told.

Coaches on salary, not on commission

Nobody here earns more by selling you more. Our coaches are salaried employees with a fixed session load, which is why they will tell you to take a week off when you need one and why the same coach is still there in year three.

One price, cancel any time, no contract

No twelve-month lock-in, no initiation fee, no annual maintenance charge that appears in March. Membership is month to month, cancellation is a form at the desk or an email, and the price you join at is the price you keep for as long as you stay.

A floor that is never a free-for-all

Capped class sizes, a coach on the floor during every staffed hour, equipment that gets serviced on a schedule we publish, and a hard rule that nobody trains a movement they have not been shown. Busy is fine. Chaotic is not.

The assessment

Most people do not need more effort. They need a programme.

Almost everybody who joins us has tried this before and stopped, and the thing that failed was never effort. It was the plan: five days a week when three were sustainable, the same four exercises for two years, no easier weeks, and no record of what was actually lifted.

So your first appointment here is ninety minutes with a coach and it costs nothing. We screen how you move, take baseline numbers we can repeat cheaply — grip, blood pressure, a chair-stand count, single-leg balance — and ask what your week honestly looks like. You leave with a written twelve-week programme, on paper, whether or not you ever come back.

  • A movement screen, so restrictions get designed around rather than pushed through.
  • Baselines re-measured at twelve weeks, the same way, so progress is arithmetic rather than a mood.
  • Nothing to sign, and nobody in this building is paid commission for signing you up.

How it works

From the first phone call to the twelve-week retest

Seven steps, and you have a written programme in your hand after the first one.

  1. You book an assessment, not a tour

Ninety minutes with an actual coach, free, and with nothing to sign at the end of it. A tour tells you where the toilets are. An assessment tells you whether we can help, and occasionally the answer is that you should see a physical therapist first.

  2. We screen how you move, and write it down

Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, balance and overhead reach, plus resting heart rate, blood pressure, grip and a chair-stand test. Restrictions get recorded so every coach who ever works with you can see them.

  3. You get a written twelve-week programme the same day

Printed and emailed, in plain language, with the reason for each block spelled out. Built around the number of days you can honestly commit to — which is usually fewer than the number you would like to claim.

  4. A coach walks you through the floor and the equipment

Two orientation sessions are included with every membership. Nobody trains a movement here they have not been shown, and nobody has to work out which lever does what while somebody waits behind them.

  5. You train, and somebody notices whether you do

Coached members get a named coach and a monthly fifteen-minute check-in. If you disappear for three weeks, you will get a message from a person who knows you, not an automated re-engagement email.

  6. The programme is rewritten every six weeks

New block, adjusted emphasis, a planned easier week built in. Progression is recorded as numbers rather than felt as a mood, which is the difference between getting stronger and simply attending.

  7. We retest at twelve weeks and tell you the truth

The same measurements from day one, taken the same way. If it worked we will show you where. If it did not, we will tell you why and change it — the most common reason is attendance, and the second is sleep.

Woodside, and the blocks around it

One gym, one location, and the same owner since 2009

We are not a franchise and we are not part of a chain. Eighteen thousand square feet on 61st Street, thirty seconds from the 61st Street–Woodside station, and most of our members live within a mile of it. That is why the coach who assessed you in year one is still the coach who writes your programme in year four.

Every coach on this floor holds a nationally accredited personal training or strength and conditioning certification, is current on CPR and AED, and carries their own professional liability cover on top of the club's. We will show you a coach's credentials before you book with them rather than after — ask at the desk, or ask the coach.

  • Two minutes from the 61st Street–Woodside station — the 7 train, the LIRR, and the Q32, Q60, Q66 and Q70 buses all stop within a block. There is metered parking on 61st Street and Roosevelt Avenue, and a small members' lot behind the building.
  • Free 90-minute assessment and a free trial week, with nothing to sign.
  • Month to month, no initiation fee, no annual charge and no notice period.
  • Nine languages spoken across the coaching team and the front desk.

Who trains here

Beginners, lifters, and everybody in between

People starting from absolutely zero — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

People starting from absolutely zero

The largest single group in the building, and the one everything here is designed around. If you have never held a barbell, cannot do a push-up, and have quietly walked past this door more than once, you are the normal case and not the exception. The first six weeks are deliberately easy enough to be repeatable.

Desk workers with a stiff back and forty spare minutes — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Desk workers with a stiff back and forty spare minutes

Ten hours a day at a keyboard produces a very specific set of problems — a locked thoracic spine, hips that no longer extend, and shoulders that live somewhere near the ears. We train the opposite of your day, not a generic full-body circuit, and it takes less time than you think.

Lifters who want a programme instead of a mood — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Lifters who want a programme instead of a mood

You already train. You have been running the same four movements for two years and the numbers stopped moving eighteen months ago. What you need is periodisation, an honest look at your technique, and someone willing to tell you your bench is stalled because your upper back is weak.

Adults over sixty who want to stay independent — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Adults over sixty who want to stay independent

Strength training is the single most effective intervention against losing your independence, and it is dramatically under-prescribed. We load carefully, progress slowly, and measure the things that actually predict a fall — grip, single-leg balance, and how fast you can stand up from a chair.

In their words

What members say once they have been here a while

They told me to do less

I came in wanting to train five days a week and Marcus put me on three. I argued. He was right — it was the first time in about a decade that I got past week four without hurting something or just stopping.

Three weeks on an empty barbell

I thought Tomasz was wasting my time. Then I squatted more in five months than I had in the three years I spent teaching myself from videos, and my knees stopped complaining. I have since apologised.

Member since 2023, Sunnyside

The class actually stops when it is full

Twenty-four bikes, twenty-four people, and if you did not book you do not get in. It sounds harsh until you have been in a cycling class with forty bikes crammed into a room built for twenty-four.

Member since 2022, Jackson Heights

She talked to my physical therapist

I finished PT for a shoulder and had no idea what I was allowed to do. Priya called my therapist, got the restrictions in writing, and built around them. Nobody at my old gym would have known who to call.

Member since 2024, Elmhurst

No contract, and they meant it

I cancelled in July when my hours changed and it took one email and no argument. I rejoined in October at the same price I had before. That is the entire reason I recommend this place.

Questions

The questions we are asked most

How much does a gym membership in Woodside, NY cost?

Our Foundation membership is $89 a month for full gym access, an assessment and a written programme. Coached is $189 a month and adds unlimited classes, two small-group sessions a week and a named coach. One-to-One is $549 a month and includes eight private sessions. All three are month to month with no contract, no initiation fee and no annual charge — the pricing page sets out exactly what is in each and what the add-ons cost.

How much is a personal trainer in Woodside, NY?

A single sixty-minute private session is $95, a block of ten is $850, and the One-to-One membership at $549 a month works out to roughly $69 a session with everything else included. Small-group coaching, capped at six people, is $40 a session or included in the Coached membership. Every price is on the pricing page and none of them requires a package purchase.

Do I need to be fit before I join a gym?

No, and that idea is the single most common reason people put this off for years. The largest group in the building is people who have never trained before. Your first twelve weeks are written to be repeatable rather than impressive, and the first two orientation sessions exist precisely so that nothing on the floor is a mystery.

Is there a contract or a joining fee?

Neither. Membership is month to month, there is no initiation fee, no annual maintenance charge, and no notice period. You cancel with a form at the desk or an email and it stops at the end of the month you have paid for. The price you join at is the price you keep for as long as you stay a member.

Can I try it before I join?

Yes, twice over. The ninety-minute assessment with a coach is free and involves no obligation, and every prospective member gets a complimentary one-week pass that includes classes. Nobody here is paid commission for signing you up, which is why the trial is not a sales appointment.

I am coming back from an injury. Can you train me?

Usually yes, and it is a large part of what Priya does. Bring your physical therapist's discharge summary or your provider's clearance. We will build inside the stated restrictions in writing and, with your permission, speak to your therapist directly. What we will not do is guess — if we have not been told about a restriction we cannot work around it.
