Where our members come from

A gym for Woodside and western Queens, NY

Woodside first, then the neighbourhoods around it. Almost all of our members live within about two miles of the door on 61st Street, because the single strongest predictor of whether somebody keeps training is how far they have to travel to do it.

The core

Woodside, and everything within about two miles

Proximity is not a marketing point in this business, it is the mechanism. The gym you pass on the way home is the gym you attend; the excellent gym three subway stops away is the gym you pay for and visit in January. We are two minutes from the 61st Street–Woodside station, which puts a great deal of western Queens inside fifteen minutes.

Beyond the core, our online coaching has members across the wider borough, Brooklyn, Manhattan and considerably further — and our corporate programmes travel to employers anywhere in Queens.

Getting here

Which is genuinely faster, and when

Written honestly, because a fifteen-minute journey that is described as five minutes is the sort of thing that quietly ends a membership in month two.

  • The 7 train

61st Street–Woodside is a two-minute walk. From Sunnyside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona and Long Island City this is almost always the fastest way here, and it runs early enough for the five o'clock opening.

  • The LIRR

Woodside station shares the same complex. If you are coming from further out on Long Island or from Penn Station, this is a genuinely quick option and it is the reason a handful of our members commute in.

  • The buses

The Q32, Q60, Q66 and Q70 all stop within a block. The Q70 connects to LaGuardia and to the Jackson Heights hub, which is how most of our Elmhurst and East Elmhurst members arrive.

  • Driving and parking

Fourteen free spaces in the members' lot behind the building, first come first served, plus metered parking on 61st Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Between four and seven in the evening the train is faster than driving from almost anywhere in the core area, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a parking space.

  • Walking and cycling

From Woodside and much of Sunnyside this is under fifteen minutes on foot. There is a covered bike rack inside the entrance, which matters more than it sounds in February.

  • Not coming here at all

Online coaching, for members who travel constantly, work nights, or live too far for a commute to be sensible. Same coaches, same programmes, weekly video form review.

Being local

What sixteen years on this block actually means

  • Nine languages on the coaching team

Woodside is one of the most linguistically diverse square miles in the country and a gym here that operates only in English is not serving its neighbourhood. Between the coaches and the front desk we cover English, Spanish, Tagalog, Nepali, Bengali, Korean, Polish, Arabic and Romanian.

  • Opening at five in the morning

Because a large share of this neighbourhood works shifts, in kitchens, in hospitals and on sites. The five o'clock hour is quiet, staffed, and genuinely used.

  • Class times built around real schedules

Lunchtime express formats for the office blocks on Queens Boulevard, a ten o'clock slot for restaurant staff before service, and a full weekend timetable for everybody whose weekdays do not permit it.

  • Coaches who stay

Every coach on the floor has been here at least eight years. In an industry with roughly annual turnover, that is the single most unusual thing about this business, and it is why your programme has continuity.

  • Employers we already work with

A restaurant group in Sunnyside, two medical practices, a construction firm and several small offices. If you work for a Queens employer there is a reasonable chance we can arrange a subsidised rate.

  • Taking over from a closed gym

It happens in this borough more than it should. If your previous gym closed mid-membership, bring whatever documentation you have — we will waive nothing you did not pay for, and we will get you training this week.

Not sure it is convenient enough

Come at the hour you would actually come

Use the free trial week to test your real time slot rather than a convenient one-off, and time the journey. If it turns out to be a fifteen-minute trek you will resent by March, we would genuinely rather you found that out for free.
