Who we train

Beginners, lifters, and everybody who thought this place was not for them

A first-timer, a teenage sprinter and a sixty-eight-year-old rebuilding after a fall need three genuinely different programmes that share a floor. What changes is the starting load, the rate of progression, and which qualities we measure — not how carefully anybody is coached.

People starting from absolutely zero — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

People starting from absolutely zero

The largest single group in the building, and the one everything here is designed around. If you have never held a barbell, cannot do a push-up, and have quietly walked past this door more than once, you are the normal case and not the exception. The first six weeks are deliberately easy enough to be repeatable.

Desk workers with a stiff back and forty spare minutes — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Desk workers with a stiff back and forty spare minutes

Ten hours a day at a keyboard produces a very specific set of problems — a locked thoracic spine, hips that no longer extend, and shoulders that live somewhere near the ears. We train the opposite of your day, not a generic full-body circuit, and it takes less time than you think.

Lifters who want a programme instead of a mood — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Lifters who want a programme instead of a mood

You already train. You have been running the same four movements for two years and the numbers stopped moving eighteen months ago. What you need is periodisation, an honest look at your technique, and someone willing to tell you your bench is stalled because your upper back is weak.

Adults over sixty who want to stay independent — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Adults over sixty who want to stay independent

Strength training is the single most effective intervention against losing your independence, and it is dramatically under-prescribed. We load carefully, progress slowly, and measure the things that actually predict a fall — grip, single-leg balance, and how fast you can stand up from a chair.

Teenagers who play a sport seriously — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Teenagers who play a sport seriously

Coached properly, resistance training is one of the safest things a young athlete does and one of the best predictors of not getting injured in their actual sport. Coached badly it is an adult programme with the weight reduced. We do the first thing.

New mothers returning to training — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

New mothers returning to training

Cleared by your provider, and then handed no instructions at all — which is where most people are. We start with breathing, pressure management and the deep core, and we do not put a barbell on your back until the foundation underneath it works.

People just released from physical therapy — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

People just released from physical therapy

The gap between the last PT appointment and being able to train normally is where most re-injuries happen. Bring the discharge summary. We will work inside its restrictions, in writing, and talk to your therapist if you want us to.

Local employers and their teams — coached training at Woodside Fitness, Woodside, Queens, NY

Local employers and their teams

Small Queens businesses, restaurant groups, medical practices and a couple of construction firms who would rather their people were strong than sedentary. Group rates, on-site sessions, and a coach who turns up whether or not anybody is watching.

If you have never done this

The first six weeks are meant to feel too easy

The single most common reason people quit a gym is not laziness. It is that somebody put them on a programme built for somebody else, they were wrecked for four days, and by week five the whole thing had become a source of dread.

So a beginner's first block here is deliberately conservative. Light loads, few exercises, and a volume you could repeat next week without thinking about it. Almost nobody is sore after the first fortnight. It looks unambitious on paper and it is the reason our members are still training in year three rather than in February.

  • Two equipment orientations with a coach, so nothing on the floor is a mystery.
  • Nobody trains a movement here they have not been shown — that is a rule, not a courtesy.
  • A written programme in plain language, with the reason for each block explained.
  • A named coach on the Coached tier, and a monthly fifteen-minute check-in with a human being.
  • Honest opening-hours guidance, so your first week is not the busiest hour of the week.

For employers and teams

Groups, squads and companies

We run off-season blocks for school and club teams, and coached sessions for a handful of local employers. Both are quoted from your calendar rather than from a package.

  • School and club teams

Ten-session off-season blocks for up to sixteen athletes, here or at your facility, built backwards from your first competition. Devon holds a certified strength and conditioning specialist credential and has six years of collegiate experience behind it.

  • Local employers

Coached sessions scheduled inside the working day, because programmes scheduled after it collapse by about week five. Trades and kitchens get hips, shoulders, grip and carrying capacity; offices get roughly the opposite.

  • Subsidised memberships

Discounted rates on any tier for five or more staff, billed to the company in whole or in part. The simplest arrangement to administer and the most flexible for shift workers.

  • One-off movement screens

Fifteen minutes per person with written individual feedback that goes to the individual and never to the employer. Often the thing that starts a longer conversation.

Whoever you are

The part that never changes

Somebody screens how you move, writes it down, and measures the same things again twelve weeks later.

An assessment before a sales pitch

Your first appointment is ninety minutes with a coach and costs nothing. We measure what you can actually do, ask what you actually want, and write you a plan. If the honest answer is that you need a physical therapist and not a gym, that is what you will be told.

Coaches on salary, not on commission

Nobody here earns more by selling you more. Our coaches are salaried employees with a fixed session load, which is why they will tell you to take a week off when you need one and why the same coach is still there in year three.

One price, cancel any time, no contract

No twelve-month lock-in, no initiation fee, no annual maintenance charge that appears in March. Membership is month to month, cancellation is a form at the desk or an email, and the price you join at is the price you keep for as long as you stay.

A floor that is never a free-for-all

Capped class sizes, a coach on the floor during every staffed hour, equipment that gets serviced on a schedule we publish, and a hard rule that nobody trains a movement they have not been shown. Busy is fine. Chaotic is not.
