The people

The six people who will actually coach you

All employees, all salaried, and nobody here has been on this floor for less than eight years. If Priya screened you, Priya writes your restrictions. If Tomasz taught you to squat, Tomasz is the one who adds the weight.

Marcus Ellery, Founder and head coach at Woodside Fitness

Marcus Ellery

Founder and head coach

Certified strength and conditioning specialist · with us since 2009

Marcus opened this gym after eleven years coaching in commercial clubs where trainers were paid on commission and members were sold packages they never used. He still writes the beginner template every new member starts on, and he still runs the free assessment for anyone who asks for him by name.

Elena Vásquez, Nutrition director at Woodside Fitness

Elena Vásquez

Nutrition director

Registered dietitian nutritionist · with us since 2013

Elena is a registered dietitian, which is a licensed clinical credential and not a weekend certificate. She will not sell you a supplement, will not put you on a meal plan you cannot cook, and is unusually willing to tell somebody that their diet is fine and their sleep is the problem.

Devon Achebe, Performance coach at Woodside Fitness

Devon Achebe

Performance coach

Certified strength and conditioning specialist · with us since 2015

Devon runs the turf, the sled and every athlete under twenty in the building. He played college football, then spent six years in collegiate strength and conditioning before deciding he would rather coach fifteen-year-olds properly than twenty-year-olds who had already been coached badly.

Priya Raghunathan, Mobility and rehabilitation lead at Woodside Fitness

Priya Raghunathan

Mobility and rehabilitation lead

Doctor of physical therapy · with us since 2017

Priya is a licensed physical therapist who works on this floor rather than in a clinic, which means she catches things at the point where they are still an annoyance. She takes every post-rehab referral, runs the mobility classes, and is the person who tells Marcus when somebody needs to stop.

Tomasz Wójcik, Strength coach at Woodside Fitness

Tomasz Wójcik

Strength coach

Certified personal trainer, competitive powerlifting coach · with us since 2012

Tomasz has coached three national-level lifters and roughly four hundred people who will never compete at anything, and he is genuinely more interested in the second group. He is the reason our beginners squat well: he will spend an entire session on an empty bar without once making it feel like a waste of time.

Nadia Haddad, Group fitness director at Woodside Fitness

Nadia Haddad

Group fitness director

Certified group fitness instructor, indoor cycling and boxing · with us since 2016

Nadia programmes every class on the timetable in six-week blocks so that a Tuesday conditioning class in week five is measurably harder than it was in week one. She also caps every class she teaches and will genuinely turn people away rather than run forty bodies in a room built for twenty-four.

Why it is the same faces

Coaches on salary, in an industry that runs on turnover

The commercial fitness industry has close to annual turnover among personal trainers, and the reason is structural: commission pay, no floor salary, and a business model that treats a coach as a sales channel. Members pay for that turnover in continuity they never get.

Our coaches are salaried employees with a fixed session load and no commission on anything. It is a more expensive way to run a gym and it produces the single thing members value most — the person who assessed you in year one is still the person writing your programme in year four, and they remember what your left shoulder does.

  • Salaried employees with a fixed session load — nobody earns more by selling you more.
  • No commission on memberships, sessions, packages or supplements. There are no supplements.
  • Certification body and expiry date on the wall by the desk, for every coach, on request.
  • A licensed physical therapist and a registered dietitian on staff, not on a referral list.
  • Nine languages across the coaching team and the front desk.

Credentials

What each of these letters actually means

Worth knowing wherever you train, because two of these are protected clinical credentials and the rest are not.

  • Certified strength and conditioning specialist

The credential the strength and conditioning field genuinely recognises. It requires a bachelor's degree, a written examination covering exercise science and programme design, and continuing education to maintain. Marcus and Devon both hold it.

  • Certified personal trainer

A nationally accredited certification with an examination and continuing-education requirements. The quality varies considerably by certifying body, which is why we publish which one rather than only the initials.

  • Doctor of physical therapy

A clinical doctorate and a state licence. It is not a fitness certification — it is a healthcare credential, and it is why Priya can read a surgical protocol and decide what comes off your programme.

  • Registered dietitian nutritionist

An accredited degree, a supervised practice programme, a national examination and a licence. In most of this country 'nutritionist' is a title anybody may use; this one is not, and the difference is the entire reason Elena is the person having that conversation.

  • CPR and AED, current

Every coach on this floor, without exception, and it comes off the floor with them if it lapses. It is the least interesting item on this list and the one you would most want on the day it mattered.
